Gallery of our New Bunkers
The Course Improvement Project (CIP) has been set up to modernise the course layout and maintain a strong but fair challenge for all levels of play. A major design tenet is to rationalise the number of bunkers from 59 to 45 ensuring that bunkers are consistent in style, high quality, visually attractive and in keeping with Mortonhall heritage. This work will ensure that bunkers better influence play, giving both high and low handicappers a more exciting game.
Some examples of new bunkers from the beginning to the end of the process:
Tom Mackenzie of Mackenzie and Ebert and a past president of the European Golf Architects Association was commissioned to design our new bunker layout. His appreciation of the course and his enthusiasm to see our rich heritage maintained and enhanced is easy to see. He wrote “On a sunny day, Mortonhall is a spectacular place to play golf. The variety of views that unfold throughout the round are as good as any. They lift the spirits as much as some of the hills lift the heart rate. They have been a key factor in the success of the Club over the years. Golfers love to play in beautiful places, especially the majority for whom the game is more about exercise and company rather than competition……The Club is rightly proud of its course but it recognises that its bunkering needs to be addressed. Bunkers are one of many elements that make up all courses. The challenge that is posed to the players is a combination of the bunkering and all of the other factors such as the weather, the terrain, trees and rough”
The tender for our course improvement works went out in March 2018 and Golflink Evolve Limited was chosen as our preferred contractor. Golflink has an excellent pedigree, with an excellent work force who are well known and respected in the industry. The work is being undertaken in 2 phases, and in each phase there is a 3 step process of 1 – creating and shaping the new bunkers, with new turf laid (undertaken by Golflink) 2 – the addition of a bunker liner (Capillary Concrete, supplied by Border Sports) and 3 – filling the bunkers with sand.
Phase 1 work started in mid-September 2018 and covered holes 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 16, 17 and 18 plus some work on a green side bunker on 15. Golflink completed their part of the work in less than the 6 weeks allocated. Our own green staff worked very closely with the contractor and have been excited to be an integral part of the project. They have been responsible for filling in the redundant bunkers away from the contractor’s working area, and in the large job of putting the Capillary Concrete lining into the bunkers.
We are on the verge of creating something very special that will take Mortonhall golf course to a new level. There is a buzz about the clubhouse and members are excited about what they are seeing and eagerly await the start of the new season. The bunkers are now finished and await a final layer of sand, scheduled just before the start of the 2019 golf season. We will have up to six temporary greens in play until the early spring but the course is very playable – 18 great holes are open each day. Please do come and sample the course as it evolves into the new format – the ongoing work is quite amazing and the scenery is as always, stunning.
